Dent Head Viaduct - Project - Lyndon Scaffolding

Question: What’s got 10 arches, is over 100 ft high, 199 yards long & sits in some of the UK’s most stunning National Park landscape…oh, and was recently covered in another quality Lyndon SGB Scaffold?

Answer: The incredible Dent Head Viaduct in the Yorkshire Dales, on the famous Settle to Carlisle railway line.

Lyndon SGB was contracted by Network Rail to design & erect an 18m high, nine lift, 11m arched scaffold in tube & fitting, with our alloy beams and a Haki staircase in the amazing Dentdale valley.

The nine-man job was to facilitate first the inspection and then the refurbishment of the iconic railway viaduct, which was built from local Dent marble between 1869 and 1875 for the Midland Railway Company and is now looked after by clients, Network Rail.

Works on the in-house designed scaffold started in a bitter February and were completed on schedule. Chief Lyndon SGB lads on site were Danny Griffiths and Steve Finley.

Lyndon SGB Regional Manager, Jon Cooke, said:

“This is just the sort of job we are geared up for at Lyndon SGB and enjoy, for a top client in Network Rail.

It’s such a beautiful location and structure and we’ve been met with some interesting challenges, like hauling all the gear up to the remote site in the snow – an arduous task. We’ve also had to be very careful how we operate on site in such a sensitive and special National Park environment, being 100% sustainable as we go.

And the way we have tied the scaffold to the Grade II listed viaduct is very special – to minimise the impact of the scaffold on the superb old railway viaduct. It’s been a great job so far for Network Rail (who we’ve done a few jobs like this for in this region) and a real privilege to work on preserving a part of railway history, in such a superb part of the UK.”
